Project Spotlight:

Davidson Home with Existing Lights

This outdoor lighting project turned out beautifully! We enjoyed working with the homeowners to design the perfect lighting plan for their home and property. From the beautiful, architectural features of the home itself to the evergreens surrounding their immaculate pool area, we were able to highlight the best features of their home and make the backyard a perfect place for nighttime relaxation.

Outdoor Lighting Objectives

During the initial design consultation, the clients’ lighting objectives were to update their current lighting system, highlight the front of their house, and incorporate additional, subtle lighting into the backyard area.

The homeowners’ existing lighting system was installed seven years prior. Over time, however, the lighting became less effective as the landscaping matured and the plants grew larger. Oftentimes we see older lighting systems that need to be readjusted. While this is an easy fix for trained outdoor lighting specialists, as a preventative measure, we always encourage our clients to schedule annual maintenance of their systems.

In the end, we decided to reposition the current fixtures and add additional architectural lighting on the home and accent lighting on the trees lining the perimeter of the backyard. We even scheduled a nighttime demonstration to ensure that we were selecting the appropriate Kelvin temperature, beam spread, and lumen output for each application. This was the perfect opportunity for us to show the homeowners what each temperature of lamp would look like in person, especially on the evergreen trees.

To achieve the desired look, we installed roughly 17 additional lights for a total of 30 low voltage outdoor lights throughout the property.

Enhancing Curb Appeal

In the front, we used a combination of uplights positioned at the base of the home as well as small, gutter-mounted lights to highlight the architectural features of the home and increase curb appeal at night. The lights add the perfect amount of drama and create a lovely warm glow across the front of the home.

Multiple Viewing Angles

Because this home is on a corner lot, the homeowners decided to continue the architectural lighting around the side of the home that is visible from the street. This was a fantastic addition as it ensures that the home is lit from all viewing angles.

Lighting for Outdoor Living

As mentioned earlier, the perimeter of the backyard was lined with beautiful evergreen trees. We selected higher Kelvin lamps for this application to bring out the beautiful green colors of the needles rather than the brown tones of the bark and branches.

Creating Depth with Light

The visual effect of these accent lights is truly stunning! The lighting of these trees creates a beautiful ambiance which makes the outdoor living areas more inviting and usable at night. In addition, these lights create visual interest and depth in areas that would normally be flat and dark.
