Project Spotlight:

Florida Home with Tropical Landscaping

When a friend buys a home in Florida and needs outdoor lighting, we travel! It was so fun designing and installing a custom outdoor lighting system for this beautiful home. From the tropical landscaping and gorgeous, mature oak in the front to the beautiful pool in the covered courtyard, we were able to highlight the best features of this home and property.

Outdoor Lighting Objectives

During the initial design consultation, the homeowners’ lighting objectives were to accent the home and landscaping to create depth and interest in the front of the home and to provide ambient lighting for the pool area in the back.

In the end, we installed a total of 55 low voltage outdoor lights throughout the estate.

Creating Depth with Light

The established landscaping surrounding this home was a dream to light. Because we had so many options, we decided to strategically select beautiful trees and plants throughout the property to light from various angles. Our goal was to create depth and interest throughout the yard while maintaining visual balance. Lighting the large oak tree in the front was a must. We installed three lights around this tree for two reasons. First, we wanted the light to reach into the canopy and second, we needed to make sure the tree was lit from all viewing angles.

There was certainly no shortage of gorgeous palm trees to light throughout this property and the result was stunning.

We also chose a few smaller plants to light to create some balance with the larger trees and to draw your eye down and around to the pathway leading to the home.

Architectural Lighting

In the front, because the home is single-story, we opted to use wall wash lights with wider beam angles to wash the front of the home in light as opposed to creating beams of light with traditional accent lights. The final effect is soft and works well as a background to the busy landscaping.

Navigational Lighting

There are so many reasons to install outdoor lighting, but here you can really see how lighting facilitates safe navigation throughout the property. Notice how each fixture provides just enough light to softly illuminate the path, creating visual interest in an area that would normally be flat and dark.

Outdoor Lighting for Outdoor Living

The number one way to create an inviting, nighttime atmosphere in an outdoor living space is to add ambient lighting. Notice we added architectural lighting behind the planters that create lovely, ambient light for the pool area. We also installed dimmable pool cage lights to create balance with another layer of light and to give the homeowners an option for additional ambient lighting.
